Description

This collection of one hundred documents traces the emergence of the Irish nation and responses to that development. They represent an effort to present a broad spectrum of political and constitutional issues – all centred around the key question of national self-government. They are, in fact, a chronology of progress, with some diversions and set-backs, towards the attainments of the promised land of nationhood.

The collection begins with the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland in 1869 and traces the increasing demand for Irish independence up to the period prior to the 1916 Rebellion. It includes documents featuring all the main personalities of that period, including Isaac Butt, John MItchel, Michael Davitt, Charles Stewart Parnell, William Gladstone, Randolph Churchill, Lord Rosebery, John Redmond, George Wyndham, Arthur Griffith, Rudyard Kipling, Bonar Law, Sir Edward Grey and Patrick Pearse.
